style fix

This dark theme thing is a bit more complex than I thought. :) Some fixes to comment styling in Stormy Horizon 1.1.

stormy horizon

It’s time for another K2 style!  This is a light-on-dark style based on a photo that I took last fall.  This is a bit of a departure for me, being one of the only dark designs I’ve ever done.  So if you think it’s awful, feel free to give me suggestions.  It’s called “Stormy Horizon” and is compatible with K2 version 0.9.6.  It may not work completely with older versions of K2.  I’ve also updated Kyoto Sunset and Crown of Daisies to work properly with newer versions of K2, so if you’re running a new-ish release of K2, you should get version 3 of these themes.  Older releases are still available for people running older versions of K2.

There is new prettiness at the Robert Boyce Web Design site.  I’m also planning on adding my K2 styles to the portfolio at some point

I’ve got a full-time job this summer at the University of Illinois Extension doing web design/development/maintenance now, so my freelance work has taken something of a back seat to that for now.

wp 2.2 update

So there’s still no official K2 release for WordPress 2.2.  There’s nothing that I can really do with my styles to address this issue.  Fortunately there is a plugin that disables the new Widgets feature of WordPress that was causing the problem in the first place.  So, if you want to use K2 under WordPress 2.2, this should fix any issues you have.

Download Disable WordPress Widgets plugin.

wp 2.2 compatibility

The current release of K2 isn’t compatible with WordPress 2.2 without a few hacks, and so my themes aren’t quite, either. I’ll have new releases within the next two weeks, but for now either hold of on upgrading or live without my themes. Sorry about the trouble.

coda

Today Panic released their latest product: Coda.
It looks amazing.
It’s an all-in-one FTP client and text editor, and it seems to be pretty much written for my personal use. The FTP client is a light version of Transmit, which I don’t use because I can’t really justify buying it when Cyberduck is free (and open source). The text editing portion is from SubEthaEdit, giving it good web language syntax highlighting and those insanely good collaborative editing features along with a WebKit preview mode. There’s also a custom CSS editor, JavaScript debugger and web design reference book built in. The real kicker for me is its ability to track changes to a local copy of the website and then upload them. Cyberduck’s Synchronize function is stronger in theory, since it works both ways, but it’s much worse because it has to check the update times on all the remote files making Cyberduck’s already slow transfer grind to a halt. And then it doesn’t work for me since my remote server is in a different timezone, so the modified times never match up. This isn’t Cyberduck’s fault, but it makes the feature pretty worthless. Coda’s interface for managing multiple sites is very elegant as well. I imgine that I’ll but a copy before my 14-day trial is up, especially since it’s going for $20 off the eventual $99 retail price right now.

not a trick (kyoto 2.0)

In all seriousness, Kyoto Sunset version 2 is now up for download. Features should be the same as Crown of Daisies 2. (See my post about that release for more info.)
If you had trouble with the old zip archive of Crown of Daisies, try downloading it again.

Expect something interesting sometime in the future, since the college admissions process is all but over.

crown update

Yes, less than a week after the initial release, I’m posting version 2 of my Crown of Daisies style for K2. I really have added some worthwhile features in the past 4 days, though. I went through and cleaned up all the CSS, including some stuff that simply no longer existed in WordPress 2.1 or K2 0.9. The menu at the top of the header is now the same class as the menu at the bottom, with the ID of menu-top responsible for positioning it at the top.  I also added styling to make all posts in the category Quick appear in a smaller font and with a layout generally more fitting to short posts.  (This styling doesn’t apply on their individual pages.)  The post immediately before this one is a quick post, if you look at the front page.

A similar update to Kyoto Sunset is likely to follow shortly.

crown of daisies

A new K2 style is out. You can grab it from here if you like what you see in front of you. I also updated Kyoto Sunset to use Internet Explorer’s alpha filter for transparency in the header.

I’ve also been working on a new frontpage for Uni. You can check it out here. Inspired by Brown University’s website, it uses some of Yahoo’s nice UI libraries for fancy sliding efects. It’s also where I picked up the IE transparency trick.

I’ll probably put up some updates to my design site over the next week, seeing as I have spring break in Maryland and not a whole lot else to do.

this one goes up to 0xA

I downloaded this a few days ago thanks to a reference from Daring Fireball’s Linked List, but I didn’t look at the front page until now. This is probably one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while.
